AWAGO’s Impact on Women’s Collectives
AWAGO’s Mobile Women’s Wellness Team brings critical mental health and social services directly to the most vulnerable Ugandan women, meeting them where they are—within their self-formed collectives. By integrating meditation and wraparound social support into these trusted community spaces, we listen to their needs, honor their choices, and empower them with the tools for resilience and healing.
Women reported reduced stress and anxiety.
Women saw improvement in their overall health..

Women experienced a boost in self-esteem.
Women significantly cut back on excessive alcohol use.
Why This Matters
Mental health struggles among African women are widespread, yet access to culturally relevant, affordable care remains limited.
- 1 in 5 African women will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime (WHO, 2022).
- Depression (5.9%) and anxiety disorders (4.7%) are the most common conditions affecting African women (WHO, 2016).
- There are only 1.3 psychiatrists per million people in Africa—far below the global average of 13.9 (WHO, 2020).
AWAGO Addresses Barriers to Care

Through its community-driven approach, AWAGO creates safe spaces where women can heal, support one another, and reclaim their well-being—empowering them to lead healthier, more self-determined lives.
